Lesson 1 : Introduction to PHP

Introduction to PHP :

PHP is introduced by RASMUS LERDORF in 1994. It is an open source , so that any one can use it. PHP actually stands for “Hypertext Preprocessor”. The syntax of the PHP is mostly borrowed from the PERL,C and Java languages. PHP is easiest than any other server scripting languages. Most of the Dynamic pages of websites are created by using PHP.

PHP 3.0 was the First full fledged version released in 1998.It was written by Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans and developed by Zend Engine.Later in 2000 the PHP 4.0 was released.After all changes the 5.0 version was the greatest enhance in language by introducing the PDO(PHP Data Objects) in it .Later several bug fixes come acrossed .At present the version released was 7.0.

What PHP actually does :

  • PHP can create the Dynamic Content of the pages like making Gallery, Several web applications,mail sendings.etc.
  • PHP can reduce the time than any other languages in creating the dynamic websites whether it is huge or small.

Why for PHP :

  • PHP can run across any Platforms Like Windows, MAC, Linux.
  • PHP supports wide range of Databases.
  • PHP can easily run in servers like Apache, IIS, etc

PHP Based Frameworks and CMS :

PHP has 13 Frameworks and Several CMS.The famous CMS was Word Press, Joomla, Drupal, Magneto, Presta shop, Abante cart, Moodle, Os Ticketing, Oragne CRM etc.. The mostly used Frameworks was Laravel, CakePHP, CodeIgniter, Zend Framework 2, Symfony , Yii, Phalcon, Slim, Aura, PHP-MVC, FuelPHP, Kohana, Fat-Free.

Syntax :

The entire code was written in between <?php…..?>and we can also use <?……?> (short tags) . We can also use ASP style <%…%> tags but we have to change the permissions in php.ini file. So, mostly we use only <?php…..?> tag.The File must be saved as .php . The most important thing is PHP is an Case sensitive.


PHP is an Open source . To run a PHP code you must a Server and Database. So, the following servers supports the PHP.

    • XAMPP
    • WAMPP
    • LAMP

Note: All the Servers were Open source . so we can easily download from their official sites.
